SOME MISSION MIRACLES

The beautiful baptism of Eli and Christine Lucat...
Eli first met the elders in Grand Island. He and Christine were taught by Elder Smith and Elder Mapu and were fellowshipped by many missionaries. (Eli can name every single one, many of whom have returned home. Hopefully, you are all seeing the fruits of your labor!) They loved the ward and members in Grand Island and the missionaries and their message but weren't yet ready to commit. When Eli and Christine moved to Omaha, they all lost track of each other. One day in Wal Mart, Eli and Christine noticed a companionship of sister missionaries, Sister Orton and Sister Borla. They approached them and told them they had been taught by Elders Smith and Mapu and that they loved them. The sisters quickly offered to continue teaching them and they happily accepted! After a few lessons, their teaching was continued by Sister Slater and Sister Abbott who were serving in the Ralston La Vista Ward where Eli and Christine were living. Yesterday this wonderful couple was baptized and today they were confirmed! What a wonderful weekend for all involved and a beautiful new beginning for this sweet family.

Steve was left with cerebral palsy after a surgical error when he was a young child.  His mother Ruth spent her whole life from then on as his primary caretaker.  Sister Blomstead of one of the North Platte wards became one of Steve's home health care workers more as an effort to help Ruth than out of need for a job.  She provided far more than the services she was paid for and genuinely came to love Ruth and Steve.  She would often share her love for the gospel with them.  At her suggestion, Sister Galbraith and Tiritilli began to make visits to Ruth and Steve and ultimately began teaching Steve.  President Gardner and I had the chance to attend one of these visits.  Steve was very interested in all they said.  He even asked questions.  We were so touched to see the sisters had really been given a gift of being able to understand his speech and answer his questions.  They testified with strength and with such love.  Steve was so touched, felt the Holy Ghost and desired to be baptized.  Ruth is very protective of Steve and while she thought there was a lot of good in the church, she declared many times that, "after 90 years of living, she wasn't interested in making any changes."  She was also concerned that just the process of entering the baptismal water could be dangerous for Steve.  Illnesses, especially respiratory, are particularly dangerous for Steve.  She wouldn't budge despite Steve's persistence.  President Gardner, seeing The Lift, on Mormon Messages one day, recognized that this was inspiration and contacted the stake president and two North Platte bishops and suggested the priesthood quorums organize men to come each night and assist Ruth with the difficult and heavy lifting task of getting Steve into bed each night.  (She had hired help do this but had found multiple times that these aides had stolen from her, reported hours they hadn't actually worked etc. and this had become a real trial for her.) The brethren as well as Elders Olsen and Hubbard, the zone leaders in North Platte at the time began to take care of this nightly routine as well as reading a chapter from the Book of Mormon with Steve and Ruth before bed.  Ruth's heart was touched and she allowed Steve to be baptized.  The Elders and Sister Blomsteads’ son were with him in the font to carry and support his weight.  It was a beautiful experience for all to see the joy on his face.  A few months later after attending church with Steve, reading and asking for herself, Ruth too was baptized.  Steve passed away at the end of January following a bad respiratory virus.  Elder Hubbard was blessed to take Steve's name to the temple and complete his work at Ruth's request.  His work was completed two days before Steve's funeral services and he was buried in his temple clothing.  Ruth is so excited to see her eternal family again and looks forward to doing her own work or having someone else do it for her as well.  Ruth and Steve and their story has been a delight.  We were able to see someone go through the whole process.  Steve endured much for sixty years before finding the gospel but was grateful every day for the truth he had found.

JUNE - 2016

Missionaries serving near the area of Werner Field had the opportunity to sing the national anthem at Mormon Night at the Storm Chasers game. They represented NOM and the church so well! One of the ushers asked me where on earth we found such a clean, wholesome looking group of college students! He was even more impressed when he found what they were truly doing in Nebraska!  -- Sis. Gardner

"A MIGHTY CHANGE OF HEART"
This was a inspired assignment given by President Gardner to the mission leaders first, and then all missionaries at a later date.  A assignment to read, ponder, answer and report -- to help us all have a mighty change of heart.  Everyone is excited about this and knows the importance of it and the help us all to have a change of heart.

The scriptures of focus are:  Mosiah 5:1-2, 7-8; Alma 5:7. 12-14; Helaman 15:6-8

Elder Karl, Garrett, Smith, Sherman, Sister Yancey and Youngberg

I am so proud of these wonderful missionaries. Book of Mormon the musical was showing this last week in Omaha. We were there to answer questions before and after the shows. We taught the Message of the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ hundreds of times. Our copies of the Book of Mormon contained marked references to answer the Questions of the Soul. We know that there will be connections made with heaven as all those who accepted a copy seek answers from our loving Father in Heaven.     --- President Gardner

Some of our elders and sisters serving in or near downtown Omaha had an amazing experience this week! The Book of Mormon Musical was playing here in Omaha and they were able to stand outside the theater and visit with people as they entered and exited the theater. They told them they were the REAL missionaries and taught the restoration over and over again, answered questions, and shared their testimonies and a Book of Mormon with those who chose to listen. They had a wonderful time! One evening there was a torrential rain and they stood in the rain proclaiming the gospel and having the time of their lives! Helaman 5:12 came to my mind as they stood in the mighty storm committed to talk to all who would listen. In my heart of hearts, I know that these young people have built their foundation on their savior Jesus Christ and though the storms may come, they will have no power over them because of the foundation on which they are built and for which they are proud to stand and represent! Oh how we love them all!                              ----Sis Gardner

THE STANDARD OF TRUTH

"Our missionaries are going forth to different nations... The Standard of Truth has been erected; no unhallowed hand can stop the work from progressing; persecutions may rage, mobs may combine, armies may assemble, calumny may defame, but the truth of God will go forth boldly, nobly, and independent, till it has penetrated every continent, visited every clime, swept every country, and sounded in every ear, till the purposes of God shall be accomplished, and the Great Jehovah shall say the work is done.

WORLDWIDE MISSIONARY BROADCAST
JANUARY 20, 2016
FOR 75,000 MISSIONARIES SERVING ACROSS THE GLOBE

The role of the Holy Ghost in conversion -- presented by:
       Elder David A. Bednar
Meeting the needs of those whom the missionaries teach -- presented by:
        Sister Bonnie L. Oscarson
Retention, activation, and working with Church members -- presented by:
         Elder L. Whitney Clayton

(a summary from the) message given by:  Elder Dallin H. Oaks

“The fundamental purpose of our missionary work is to teach the word of God that men and women cannot be saved in the highest degree of glory, the celestial kingdom, without faith in the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, and that the only way to lay claim to the ultimate merits of that Atonement is to follow the commands of its author: repent and be baptized and receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost and the ordinances of the temple and endure to the end. Those who do this can be exalted in the celestial kingdom.”

No one else can do this, declared Elder Oaks. Other churches cannot do it. Good Christian living cannot do it. Good faith, good desires and good reasoning cannot do it.
